Ten years old, no English, no papers.
I was born in Colombia and came to the United States when I was ten. No English. No papers. No instruction manual for how any of this worked. My parents worked constantly — they still don't speak English and still don't have papers — and the entire job of figuring out the American system fell on me.
I almost didn't graduate high school. I wasn't a bad kid; I was just dropped into a system nobody at home could help me read.
